Web 2.0: Mashups

Tagged under Web, Programming

The convergence of both freely available information and APIs have led to the proliferation of mashups, one of the newest components of Web 2.0 Opens in new window. What are mashups you ask? As thoroughly introduced by this article Opens in new window, it is "an exciting genre of interactive Web applications that draw upon content retrieved from external data sources to create entirely new and innovative services." Whew, quite a mouthful. Still don’t get it? Ok, the best way to demonstrate this is through an example.

Nice Guy != Loser

Tagged under Life, Love

Ok, that was a bit geeky, but it basically means being a nice guy doesn’t necessarily equate to being a loser, which is what this biased diatribe Opens in new window expounds.

This ultimately boils down to the fact that Nice Guys don’t like themselves. Is it any wonder women don’t like them? In order to truly love someone else, you must first love yourself. Too often Nice Guys mistake obsession for "love".

Get this Guys: INSECURITY ISN’T SEXY. IT’S A TURNOFF.

WTH?

Victory!

Tagged under Life, Sports

Well, 110+ degree heat notwithstanding, the South prevailed in this year’s Who’s The Man golf tournament. Held in Auburn, CA (40 mins NE of Sacramento), it came down to the very last twosome in the field, to the very last putt in fact. Tony, team captain for the North, needed to sink a 12-foot slight downhill birdie putt for the win and the team championship. But it was not to be, his putt slid past the hole, breaking away in the last few inches. Cheers from the South team and curses from the North ensued. In the end, it was a fabulous time for all involved. Another successful Ryder Cup in the books, friendships renewed, memories retold, and legends re-casted, i leave this place with the same emotions at the end of every past Cup, wistful, reminiscent, but ultimately, brimming with anticipation at the next installment. Congratulations to Franklin for MVP, you deserved it. Thanks go to Tony for taking on the monumental task of planning and organizing. As for the rest of you guys, i’ll see you all next year!

  • Another monster drive from Big Harry...
  • What could’ve been...but not to be...

A few notes from this past weekend.

Some Programming Gems

Tagged under Web, Programming

Some programming gems for you webheads out there:

  • First is this excellent presentation from Jeremy Keith Opens in new window that Duncan Cragg alludes to Opens in new window regarding Declarative development of Javascript and Ajax Tooltip. And if you’re looking for even more info on the subject, check out Microformats’ Wiki on AHAH Opens in new window (Asynchronous HTML and HTTP).
  • For those curious about general good practices (and everyone should be), .net has a top 20 list of tips Opens in new window. Good list, though i shot them an email regarding item 6 and 9. I think item 6 should focus more on compartmentalization of code instead of preaching about PHP. And item 9 has an example that uses an inline style, which contradicts item 14: separating semantic and presentational markup. Thought they could’ve cleaned it up a bit better, but solid article nonetheless.

That’s it for me, i’ll be in Auburn, CA for the weekend at my annual golf tournament with my college buddies, made a quick backpack notes of the courses Opens in new window we’ll be playing. so hopefully, if all goes well, i’ll have some pics and an MVP trophy to post up!

Versatilist Schmersatilist

Tagged under Programming, Work

Whew, try saying that five times! Anyway, interesting conversation Opens in new window going on based on a ComputerWorld article Opens in new window regarding the future of the skilled IT worker that was posted a couple of days ago. Some very passionate commentary on both sides here, but i think a few people nailed it on the head. Companies need both: suits and geeks alike. Without the business side, the company would have no direction, no ideas on how to adapt and thrive. Without the programmers, companies would have no way to implement the ideas and motives the business people think up. Yes you could outsource some of the programming, but at the higher levels i believe you still need someone who has a deep knowledge technically of the applications and systems being dealt with. The CW article’s presumption that a non-technical versatilist will rule the IT job marketplace i think is simply that, presumptious. Personally, for a few years now i’ve been hearing the warnings of naysayers that an impending domestic job market bereft of programming positions because they’ve all been outsourced to China or India will befall the IT masses. I guess we’ll see how it all pans out by 2010, but my money’s on me, the in-house web application developer! Yay, go me!

Klingon Programming

Tagged under Humor, Programming

Meant to blog about a few things earlier today, but work (real work) and work on the backend of this blog application (more on this later) prevented it.

This list Opens in new window got a few chuckles out of me during the day at work, and if you’re a Trekkie and a programmer, like i am, i know you’ll enjoy it too! My favorite and the item i relate to the most is:

You question the worthiness of my code? I should kill you where you stand!

Kaplah!
